At home in Lisbon with Laura Dopp.

by Gregory Harris

We met with Laura Dopp in her spectacular Lisbon apartment. The apartment is set right next to one of the most famous “Miradouro” (view points) in Lisbon. Every morning she and her family wake up to a postcard view of Lisbons great sights, including the castle and the bridge.

Laura relocated from NYC, where she worked as a photography agent before cofounding a design studio for audio called One Thousand Birds. She and her husband are partners in the business, creating immersive soundscapes for films, brands, podcasts, installations and more.

They recently went to Sundance with their work on the Japanese feature documentary, Black Box Diaries. Written and directed by journalist Shiori Ito, the film is a courageous investigation of Ito’s own sexual assault in an improbable attempt to prosecute her high-profile offender. Her quest became a landmark case in Japan, exposing the country’s outdated judicial and societal systems.

What do you love the most about living here and what do you dislike most?

It’s really simple what I love! I love the light and the people. I love having fresh fish for lunch on the beach with my family and friends. I love getting lost in the streets of Alfama and that after 3 years living here so much is still new. And the church bells next to our apartment. And and and...

I don’t love the traffic so I walk almost everywhere.

Can you tell us about a secret place to visit in Lisbon?

Palacio Sinel de Cordes in Campo Santa Clara. It is the headquarters of the Trinal de Lisboa, housing innovative  architectural projects and events, promoting cultural development. It has a cafe and surprisingly large ‘secret' garden in the back. You feel the history and the possibility here. They also created Open House Lisboa, opening different spaces : palaces, private homes, churches, to the public for one weekend a year.
